Teaching

Lecture TheatreMy teaching career began at Dublin City University where I taught scientific/technical and financial translation from German into English to undergraduate and postgraduate students. I also taught IT and research skills to undergraduate students. Over the years as I gained more and more professional experience I incorporated this knowledge into my teaching, whether in the form of entire modules or simply by providing valuable professional insight into otherwise theoretical classes. While at the University of Sheffield I taught a range of subjects including:

  • Scientific and technical translation
  • Legal translation
  • Technical communication
  • Translation technologies
  • Localisation
  • Website design
  • German translation
  • Translation theory
  • Screen translation and subtitling
  • Research methods

Learning Technologies

Wherever appropriate I use a range of online resources to support my teaching; whether for university teaching or for professional training. Typical resources include discussion forums, live chat, collaborative wikis, quizzes, online workshops and video tutorials to name a just few. I have set up and maintain my own Moodle online learning environment which hosts various resources, activities and communication channels for my students. It can be accessed here. For more information about the technologies I use, visit my training page.

MA in Multilingual Information Management

I was the programme leader for the MA in Multilingual Information Management at the University of Sheffield until August 2011. I played a key role in developing and redesigning this interdisciplinary taught MA programme which was delivered by the School of Modern Languages and Linguistics the Department of Information studies. It is a unique taught MA programme which provides students with the skills to develop and maintain digital information resources which are suitable for a multilingual, multinational business environment. Students learn how to create and manage digital information and how to internationalise and localise them. This MA gives students the technical, linguistic and intercultural skills needed to manage digital information in modern business. For more information, visit the MA in Multilingual Information Management web page at the University of Sheffield.
