I have always had a keen interest in science and technology on the one hand, and communication on the other. As a child reading through various encyclopaedias little did I realise that the very combination of science and language presented by those books would provide the foundations for my future career.

 

My research interests primarily centre on technical translation and communication although I have broadened my scope to include most forms of specialised translation and communication.

While my traditional areas of expertise have resided in the field of technical communication and professional issues in translation, I have become increasingly interested in training issues and in particular the use of e-learning technologies in general as well as professional and digital communication. Of course, there is plenty of scope for combining these areas which is what I am doing at the moment.

Research Interests:

I have quite broad research interests and am keen to support researchers who want to explore new research directions which are related to my areas of expertise. To give just two examples, I supervised a PhD on screen translation into Catalan at the University of Sheffield and have been an external examiner for PhDs on the translation of patents at Newcastle University and on the design and use of controlled languages at the University of Portsmouth. I am interested in research in any of the following areas or associated areas:

• computer-assisted translation,
• translation quality assessment,
• e-learning,
• translator pedagogy,
• usability,
• history of translation,
• controlled language,
• cognitive psychology.
